Kibler kit question....
« on: June 02, 2016, 11:31:33 PM »
I got to spend about 4-5 hours today monkeying around with the new Kibler kit, which was enjoyable.  I haven't hit any major snags and everything fits together famously.  I did hit a small snag though.  I've got the ramrod pipes about 90% inlet (not pinned yet) and the ramrod slides nicely into the rearmost pipe and into the stock, BUT it appears to hang up on the rearmost barrel pin.  I can't see or imagine what else might be hanging it up.  Has anyone else had the same issue and what was the resolution?  Maybe I can just pull the barrel and file down the underlug as far as I dare, do you suppose that will get it?

Here's a photo for you guys that are curious about the gun.  It's going to be sweet.

Ganggreen,

Do you mean the pin or the barrel lug?  The lug should extend lower than the pin that goes through the lug.  You can always file a little off the bottom of the lug if it extends too far into the ramrod hole or taper the ramrod a little.  Tapering the ramrod is often done on rifles.

Yeah, I presume it's the lug, not the pin, I just misspoke initially.  I figured I'd pull the barrel and file down the lug as far as I dared and then try again.  Hopefully it's just barely hanging it up and will be fine.  I'd rather not have to thin the ramrod much, if at all and then only on the end.

You might try some inletting black or transfer substance of some kind on the lug to make sure it's the culprit before modifying it.

Just a suggestion and maybe you've already done this.  Run the ramrod in until it stops.  Mark the ramrod with a pencil even with the muzzle of the barrel.  Withdraw the ramrod and lay it on the side of the stock, with the pencil mark even with the muzzle.  That will show you the area where it's hanging up.

Pull the barrel and then run the ramrod in.  That'll tell you if it's the lug.

You are hitting the underlug. Once you have it drilled you will see how much underlug you can file off.

Yep, did it.  It's the lug.  I've already drilled it and I'm sure I can file off some of it, hopefully it will clear completely after a little work with the file.

Create a taper on the part of the rod that slides into the stock until it no longer hangs up.  Many original rods were so tapered to address this very "problem".

And, it won't stick in the stock when the wood swells.

I already did create a slight taper on that end of the rod and I did file down the underlug.  If my plan holds, I intend to reassemble everything tomorrow morning and I should be able to call it "done".
