Bought A New Book
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:43:41 AM »
I just received a copy of "The Texas Gun Trade, 1780 - 1899", by Chris Hirsch. We don't normally think of Texas as a gunmaking state, so this book contains some surprises. There are a number of large caliber Plains Rifles by Texas makers, and even an original flintlock, made in Houston during the Texas Republic period by a gunsmith named Gustavus Erichson who settled there in 1838. This book fills in another piece of the puzzle that is American gunmaking.

Texas had a large and early German immigrant population.  the oldest German style (schuetzen) shooting club in the country  (New Braunfels Schuetzen Verein, www.nbsv.org) still in operation are down there and still going strong.  I'd not be surprised to find quite a few early arms, most probably converted to percussion if one dug hard.
