18 gauge double barrel (damascus)Shotgun build
« on: July 10, 2016, 02:30:21 PM »
These are the 18 gauge shotgun barrel blanks I bougth from Dyson. Made in Belgium, 32" long. One rigth hand twist damascus , the other left hand twist. The barrels are drilled and reamed. They have to be honed on the inside. They are profiled on the outside. They have to be cleaned up on the outside, polished, breeched, joined (With ribs) and regulated.

Dyson rough sanded the muzzel of one the barrels and etched it. One look at the pattern and I was hooked. Had to have the barrels.

This is the muzzel end of the barrels.  Dyson said it takes him 2-3 hours to hone a barrel to mirror finish.

This is the breech end of the barrels. There is a "lump" on the side of the barrels. They were made for percussion Locks. The "lump" is for the Locks drip plates. This has to be filed off when using flintlocks.

I draw filed a barrel yesterday and sanded 180 grit. Took about 2 hours get ridd of all the rust. Going to clean up the next barrel today. I have acsess to a large lathe and plan to use it to finish sanding, polishing og honing the barrels. After thats done, I'll be setting the barrels in storage. I have nothing preplaned for this project. Have to find Lock kits, stock patterns, stock wood, ect. I have the book "recreating the double barrel muzzle-loading shotgun" by Brockway and will be following it.

Best regards

Rolf,
Find a wheel cylinder hone like the ones we used here when we rebuilt wheel cylinders
for hydraulic brakes on cars.I don't know if anyone still sells these or not. Here in the USA
nobody will re make a wheel cylinder because (A) they don't know how or (B)they don't
want the liability of a possible brake failure. Some restorers of old cars offer to reline these cylinders
on cars that have odd brake cylinders that can't be crossed over from another make of car.
I used Dodge truck and Lincoln wheel cylinders on my 1951 Packard when I remade the entire
brake system.

Hi Rolf,
Thanks for sharing the photos of the barrels and visit to Dyson's.  For us in the US, now is a good time (currency-wise) to do business with Peter D. and Kevin Blackley.  If I was using those barrels for a double, I would patiently order appropriate castings for a Manton or Nock lock from Kevin.  I cannot think of any modern commercially-made flintlock of appropriate style, size, and quality that would do those barrels justice.

I have finished a few of those barrels and had to ream them to finished size. They were too rough inside to just hone out. I also found that I could not buy reamers for that size that were made for shotgun bores. If you want a choke then shotgun reamers are different than ordinary reamers. Shotgun reamers have a slight taper on the end where the bore tappers into the choke portion.  The only bore reamers available now days is for a 12 ga.
I had to resort to making my own reamers. The old square reamers used in the 18th century work well for this.  Just so happens that my job today is making a square reamer for a 16 ga. Sweedish shotgun. Adjustable reamers will not work on a shotgun.

Jerry, Could you show how to make a reamer?

Finished reaming out the shotgun barrels on Runars bench. We used a short bit reamer he had made from a a 8mm square file. The two barrels took only 2-3 hours to ream. Needed only 3-4 paper schims. Two of Runars friends powerd the reamer. The reamer removed a impressiv amount of metal going through the bore.
