Progress so far on my Southern Rifle (pics)

After a much needed break, I am back to working on my rifle with a full charge of enthusiasm.  Here is the progress so far...

I'm thinking now is the time to square everything forward of the wrist to the top barrel flat and get rid of a little extra wood.  Then I will drill and install the lock bolts and start inletting the trigger plate.  Is there something I am missing on squaring things up, or is the top barrel flat about the only reference I have?  Best I can tell, the lockplate is square to the barrel.

I would get the butt plate fully installed and keep it on the gun.  All you need is one oopsie and the toe or the butt plate inlet gets messed up.   You then have to spend time repairing things that you don't want to have to repair....
