Idea for engraving pattern forum

Acer, I have a project coming up where those English patterns would be very useful. Could you maybe, post  what you receive in the tutorials, or send some to me direct?

Robby, that's a great idea to make a library of engraving patterns. We could only use images which are copyright-free. Otherwise it gets a bit sticky.

An artist could give permission to use their patterns, or an author allow use of their photos. Say, for example, Jim Chambers could post patterns, which would be appropriate for his fowler kits. If my patterns are my own design, I would have no problem with posting them. I am sure others would be willing to share their patterns as well.

This could be broken into sections for German, English, French etc, and American, Pa, NY, MA, etc.

Whadda y'all think about that?

The great thing about this forum is ALL of the information that is available.  We already have a library of guns.  Extending that to a library of  patterns is a great idea.  Why limit it to engraving patterns though?  How about one with carving patterns?

Great idea!

It would be like having a reference library at your fingertips.  I like the thought of having one for carving as well.  Great ideas!!

When I was doing a series of rifles with Siler locks so I made a page of lock plate profiles and would sketch in the different patterns I thought would look good.

I think this is a great Idea for those who are artistickey artistecally artesticelie .... can't draw can have a frame of reference and in some cases if you use a reverse print of the pattern and acetoned Q tip will allow the transfer of the copier ink onto the metal surface for engraving. Jerry Huddleston had a tutorial about transfer techiques on the old archives that should be available.

Fantastic Idea. When it comes to laying out a pattern my mind just goes blank. Sure would be nice to have some to look at!

A library of patterns would be an excellent resource for any subject matter; carving, engraving or lock plates.

A quality idea.

When you start to design your own engraving/carving patterns all you are doing is using elements from a  carving or engraving that you have studied.  Design is just recalling those elements from  the catalog of patterns that are in your mind.
