new hammer engraved
« on: December 15, 2016, 01:58:08 AM »

My Rigby's original hammer developed a crack earlier this year and so I decided to make a workable spare/substitute hammer.

The replacement hammer is from a casting of an original Rigby hammer.  I filed off the engraving that was in the casting and just got it back from the engraver today.

The hammer is not exactly the same size as the original, but close enough that it looks good.

Tim Halloran in Blue Grass Iowa did the engraving.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Good looking is an understatement. Sure hope you post pics of the whole gun when it's finished.

That is not a simple piece to engrave. Nice job.

Tim is a nice guy, enjoy visiting with him.  His turn around time is fairly fast as well.  I have used him on parts for 4 rifles now and he does a great job.  His prices are I think very reasonable as well.

Was that the repaired original that cracked?

yes, the hammer on the left is the original that cracked.  Jim Westberg fixed it.

Good looking replacement hammer. I think the old one was possibly malleable iron that was finished and case hardened.
I replaced a broken 4 screw bridle for a fellow in Alabama that had the top front post broken and that created a terrible
over travel past normal full cock. These fancy locks exhibit stunning craftsmanship but I am wondering about the materials
they used. I remember looking that the Rigby at Friendship and thought the mainspring was 4x as strong as needed and
wonder if the link between the tumbler and spring has been replaced with a shorter one.
