Going off half cocked
« on: May 12, 2017, 06:15:58 PM »
I have a puzzle that I have never run into before.  I am working with a lock the functions fine outside of the stock, but once seated in the mortise it will go off in the half cock position.  I am inletting with candle soot and cannot find where it is binding or rubbing.  Any suggestions on what the culprit might be?

Just an idea Cory - perhaps soot the lock internals up and install the lock using the lock bolts, tighten them as usual and work the lock. Take it back apart and see if there is any transfer.

You've likely already done that though... ;o)

Usually this is sear arm movement hindrance.

I will focus on the sear arm area then.  Thanks.

Make sure the sear arm isn't too long. If it is hanging at the end of the arm, it is hard to see.

Had this happen before. Sear either to long or sear movement otherwise restricted not allowing it to engage half cock notch properly.     Bob

Try putting the lock back in, WITHOUT the trigger in the gun. See if lock goes to half cock.

If the trigger is not yet in the gun, my guess is the sear arm might be too long?
If the trigger is in the gun, is there always a little slop in the trigger as you cock the lock??

Thanks everyone.  The sear arm was the culprit.  Seems to be working smoothly now.
