**Until certain things can be worked out, the John Bonewitz topic/photos will reside in the antique forum at this link. http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=4677.0 Hopefully it will be added to the ALR Library at a later date -- Dennis Glazener ALR Admin **

With pride and pleasure the Museum Committee presents the work of John Bonewitz in the museum. He joins he old colleagues Wolfgang Haga  and Andrew Figthorn who all already represented there. Special thanks to Taylor for allowing us to relocate the pictures for permanent display in the Museum.

Please add your comments and facts as a "reply" here.

Gentlemen,  My name is Henry Bishop and I am new to this long needed forum.  I maybe new to this venue but I'm not new to the study and research of John Bonewitz, Leonard Reedy and Andrew Fichthorn [Figthorn] Jr.

The other  day I tried to respond to the questions being asked about the superb example of Bonewitz's work being asked in the general forum postings.  I apparently sent my remarks off to Jupitor where they remain as this is written.  I wish I had the memory of some of your youthful members but such is not the case. Luckly I have my notes and will try again.

I am familiar with the Bonewitz on display. It is a fine example of his later work and I would place it's date of birth somewhere between 1800 and 1810.  I am not sure who came up with the patch box finial design but there are examples of this design used by Reedy, Fichthorn [Figthorn], one of the C. Becks and Bonewitz. In fact the design of the finial is generaly more associated with Reedy than Bonewitz. The rifle in question, however, was possitively carved and engraved by Bonewitz.

There are four Bonewitz rifles that I know of using this patch box design.  Three are in private collections and one resides in the Fuller Collection section of the Chickamauga Battlefield Museum.  It is important to note here that - none of the four rifles, including the one on display, are signed with the usual I B and rampant lion stamping associated with earlier Rifles made by Bonewitz. At the moment I do not know how to explain this.  I am 100% certain, however, the four rifles referred to in this post were carved and engraved by Bonewitz.

Anyone who would like to learn more about the life and times of John Bonewitz can contact me directly or get a hold of the KRA Bulletin that features the Bonewitz story.  The article along with another on the life and times of the Fichthorn [Figthorn] family can be found in a recent book published by the Kentucky Rifle Foundation ' Selected Articles from the KRA Bulletin Vol 1 - 30'.

At least one of the recent posts refers to a members plans or desire to build a rifle using the patterns and signature characteristics of Bonewitz. I have made the Bonewitz and Reedy rifles in my collection availabe to several CLA members and will do so again to the true student of these great 18th Century gunsmiths.

I have been known to talk for hours on Bonewitz, Reedy and Fichthorn so be prepared to spend some time if you contact me.   Regards,    Henry

Hey guy's this is my first post. My mother is a Reedy and I just found out last week that my great-great-great-great-great uncle is Leonard Reedy. He was the youngest brother of my 5-great grandfather George Peter Riedy. Now I know why I have always loved longrifles. Where can I get more info on Reedy and his guns?

Thanks

LReedynephew   http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=2480.0  one of reedy's guns in archive, take a look at that.  Also read Henry's article in KRA mentioned in the other thread.  this will give you a place to start.  Pretty soon you'll be doing your own genealogical research and you can pass new info on the Henry  :)

Gentlemen,

Just to back up what Brokenflint said, I do not know of anyone on the planet who is more of an authority on Bonewitz than Henry Bishop.  He is indeed "The Man" when it comes to Wolmesdorf-Reading.

Thanks for the link. I'm still learning this great site. I do have a complete paternal genealogy on Reedy going back to Hanzet L. Riedi circa 1620 in Filisur.

To:  Lreedynephew,   My research on Reedy and his family is 99% finished and deals basically from his birth until he starts his journals. I have him with Bonewitz from the 1790's until around 1816-1817 when he moved to Gratz and went out on his own. It will be interesting to compare notes, however, I'm going to be on the road until 5/23. After that I'll post my phone # and we will chat.    Henry

Lreedynephew,

Were you able to attend the Leonard Reedy Day, held in Gratz last September?

As I recall there were a couple of multi-great grandchildren present for the dedication.

No sir. I only recently verified the relation of Leonard being my 5g grandfathers youngest brother. I knew my Reedy, Reidy, Reidi ancestors were of germanic/swiss origin from Pennsylvania and I suspected that there might be a connection but, I did not know for sure. To tell the truth I live in Arkansas and have never been east. All of my travels have been out west. My line (George Peter Riedy) left Pennsylvania after the war and settled in Grayson county VA and then on to Ashe County NC and from there to TN and finally in AR.

Thanks
Wyatt

If you would like some pics of a Reedy, I can supply that...  I know where I can get my hands on an excellent example.

I am also new to this list and have been drawn to this particular post because of John Bonewitz, which doesn't seem to have been viewed very recently.

Like Reedynephew, I am also a newer found descendant of one of the gunsmiths - John Bonewitz. This info was actually learned a few years back but b/c computers & the internet wasn't up & running, it didn't get interesting until now!

Jack B has given me the number for Henry Bishop so I hope to be in touch with you shortly. I am definitely interested in the life story of John (Johann according to genealogy).

Any photo's that owners may have of Original Bonewitz rifles would be greatly appreciated.

I can be reached at bondojr@yahoo.com

Funny that this subject should come up at this time.   This past friday, Art DeCamp and Mark Wheland were at the barrel
shop and Art had his copy of a Bonewitz, made by Mark Wheland.   I think he made it while he had Henry Bishop's gun in his shop for some restoration.   Son John even made a barrel to the same dimensions as the original, and, of course, Mark
did his normal wizardry on the gun, a super copy.........Don

Message for Doug Bonawitz,   I tried your e-mail address and came up short on being able to contact you directly.  There is a ton of info on the Bonewitz family which I would be happy to share with you. The primary location for the info is in and around Pottsville and Pine grove. Not sure were you live but I can send you on a treasure hunt which may benefit both of us. My direct contact info is :  Latisabethan.Dilemma@Comcast.net I look forward to hearing from you.   Henry
