iron mounted squirrel gun
« on: June 09, 2018, 12:49:48 AM »
This is a little squirrel gun im finishing up. It has a 45" swamped 38 caliber Burton barrel, late ketland lock and some unknown set triggers that i modified.  I forged all the hardware. Its based on some North Carolina guns but not trying to copy anything in particular.

Great lines!

I'm a big fan of good looking plain rifles.   No hiding the flaws.

Well done.

Good looking rifle Joe. Should be a fun fun to shoot. I particularly  like the forged mounts you made for the rifle. Slick little flint rifle. Tim

Joe,

Your not what I had pictured in my head!! You have certainly started building front stuffers early in life!!!

No, fine looking squirrel killer and fine looking young man in the picture.  Hopefully you two can make a lot of smoke together with that little rifle!!  Beautiful finish.  Also interested in your procedure.

Thanks guys. The stock is a hard piece of maple and the color and finish is a mixture of things. I first stained it with aqua fortis then put a sealing coat of tru oil. After that dried i steelwooled the stock and gave it a light coat of asphaltum and turpentine , then rubed that back, after that a very light coat of burnt umber oil paint . i let the paint sit about an hour then buffed it off. After all that a very light coat of boiled linseed oil then let it bake in the sun .
