Germanic Hunting Rifle progress....
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:24:54 AM »
I’ve been working on this here and there, between other builds and off hours.  I put together what I have so far, and took some photos that I thought I’d share.  The carving is mostly done, although I might do some tweaks to the fan behind the cheek.  Obviously, brass needs to be finished, sights installed, etc.  It’ll have more engraving on the muzzle end of the barrel, similar to what’s at the breach, so still have a good bit of things to do.
The piece is stocked in English walnut, has a 29” Ed Rayl barrel, .62 cal.  The lock is one I picked up here on the forum, from The Rifle Shop.  Might not be entirely appropriate for the piece, but thought it would look nice.  The furniture pieces are Ron Scott’s Freund castings (except for the rear sling inlay, that I cut from sheet brass.). Most of these castings are now available from MBS.  (Thanks, Ron!). The stock architecture was inspired from an unsigned rifle, and definitely not Freund.
I’ll have this at Dixon’s if anyone who’s going is interested in looking at it.  Also, be happy to answer any questions if you have them.  Thanks!

Ed

It looks great even without the finish.

I agree with Dennis on these Jaegers but I would not reject this if I were wanting one.
Good job.

Thanks, again...

Mike..., you’re too funny

I realize these rifles aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and they’re a fairly long way removed from the typical Kentucky rifle.  I love building American pieces, but find you can do so much more with these European things, which is a nice alternative.  Maybe it’s the starving artist thing...

You guys that think this is a little “over the top” will love this..., I’m seriously thinking about fire bluing the barrel, then doing gold leaf in all the stippled areas of the engraving 😳.

Seriously, thanks for the kind words.

HI Ed,
Your rifle with the Freund Mounts has more graceful lines than the original from which I made the mounts. Congratulations on your  art work!!!! I will look forward to seeing it. Assuming you will have it at the CLA show?

Super nice work on this, Ed.  Only thing its needs done is a shipping crate with my name on it, lol!  I second Ron and hope you bring it to the CLA show, I would love to see it in person.
