Germanic “Jager” Rifle.....
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:37:57 AM »
Seems like I’ve been working on this rifle forever.  It’s a “back burner” piece I worked on here and there, between and around other builds.  I hadn’t touched it since right before Dixon’s, so I decided to go ahead and get it finished.
All the furniture is from Ron Scott, which was cast from an original.  All the design and chisel work was as cast.  The exception is the design I did around the lower screw on the butt piece.  I also did all the engraving on the barrel.  The barrel is by Ed Rayl, .62 cal., 29”.

The lock is a Rifle Shoppe lock that I purchased here on ALR.

I can’t remember if I bought the wood from Ron Scott or Wayne Dunlap, but at any rate, the rifle is stocked in English walnut.  The carving was inspired from various original pieces, but not copied specifically from any particular rifle.  I sealed / filled the stock with Hearters French Red filler, then finished with an Alkanet root varnish.  I wanted a reddish tint since a lot of these rifles, and other European pieces were finished in this manner.  I think that’s about all..., if anyone has any questions, I’d be happy to answer them.  Thanks!

Ed,
That is one very stunning gun.  Very sophisticated.  I like it a lot.  I definitely will be coming back to look at her again shortly.

Amazing!!  The details on your cheek carving and barrel engraving are incredible.  Wonderful finish as well.

Another home run, Herr Wenger!  You have that style down very, very well.  Now what you need is a filthy rich patron. Ed are you removing backgrounds in your engraving with flats or are you using something like a NSK high-speed rotary tool?

Thanks all, very much appreciated!

Dave..., I just use a Lindsay universal engraver to remove background, basically making a bunch of parallel cuts.  The cuts are made fairly deep, but it’s more of a low relief, not the deeper relief like on the cast parts.  After the lines are cut, the area is then stippled with a stone set.  I used to use a flat graver to remove material, but this is much easier, and after the area is stippled, all lines disappear.

If you can see it, the area between the “fingers” on the top of the design around the lower butt piece screw was removed in this manner.  I didn’t stippled this area, however.

Thanks again,

Wow, that is one beautiful gun!!
Can I ask, what you are using to blacken the background of the metal parts?  I know it's a newby question but I have some cast parts on the gun I'm currently working on.
Thanks, Rick

Wonderful rifle Ed!  All the little details that make up the piece come together with great effect.  Very well done, sir.

Rick..., the back ground on the brass pieces are darkened by 44/40, a cold blue solution.  Liberally rub the solution onto the brass (it’ll turn it black), then rub off with an abrasive cloth.  I use a piece of maroon colored Scotch Brite pad for this.  High spots are polished, recessed areas remain dark.

For the barrel, I simply used high temperature black spray paint, the kind you’d use for a wood stove.  Again, rub back with abrasive cloth.

Jerry..., give my regards to Fidd!

Thanks, all!

All the furniture is from Ron Scott, which was cast from an original.  All the design and chisel work was as cast.

So you didn't need to clean up the cast furniture at all?

Okay Ed. You twisted my arm. I will sight it in for you and test it on grey squirrels here. I think a .62 should stop any rodents that charge. ;-)  It’ll need a healthy dose of 2f Swiss though....

Ed,

Absolutely stunning!  Your skills keep getting better and better.  In my opinion you have made yourself one of the very best at this craft.  You won't have any trouble finding a home for whatever you decide to build.
