Colonial SC Horn by Bob Hill
« on: October 27, 2019, 10:11:03 PM »
This is a colonial period South Carolina horn crafted for me by Bob Hill.  I love the feel of Bob's horns and engraving work, and as you can imagine, I am tickled to receive this personal one.  The horn is 11" on the outside curve with a 2-1/2" base.  The SC Palmetto device has been used on several of Bob's rifles in the past.  Gamecocks were big sport in those times, and the traditional USC mascot is the Gamecock.   I hope you enjoy the horn.  God Bless,   Marc

I just thought through what I wrote above.  The palmetto engraving on the horn would have to represent a post-Fort-Sullivan addition to the horn. The palmetto logs resisting the British bombardment of Fort Sullivan/Sullivan's Island near Charleston in mid 1776 led to their becoming a SC icon. My apologies for any confusion.

Very nice horn Marc! The Palmetto is on my old battalion crest, 327th. Still active today.

Marc, that’s a beauty for sure!  The proportions are perfect, and I love the bold scrimshaw. I’m sure that one is destined to be an heirloom!

Thanks for the kind words fellows. The birds are a spin-off of the cocks in the Cockfight print by Hogarth. The way the English trimmed them for the pit they don’t look like what most people picture gamecocks today.

Bob Hill, I think we'd all appreciate if you'd start posting some pictures of more of your work. That horn is outstanding!

Thanks, Looper. I'll try and post some work sometime. I'm sorry to say I'm not much of a photographer and don't have pictures of much of my work. I'll see if my buddy, Marc, will help me post some later.

Great Horn!! Being from Six Mile SC I can appreciate everything about it, except one thing.....Being a Clemson man I can do without the Gamecocks!!  All kidding aside, what a great horn to add to your collection.
