Deer skins

Nordnecker's post "Educate me on this hide" got me to thinking...

Are most commercially tanned deer skins veg or chrome tanned? I have some tanned deer skin. It doesn't have the tell tale blue-gray tannage line in the middle of it... But it just doesn't strike me as being veg tan.

I used to send 10-15 hides a year to the Berlin Glove Factory before they were bought out by WB Place.  You could request that they be dyed any number of colors.  NONE ever had a blue-gray line in the middle.  Only the un-dyed hides were that color.  Those hides wouldn't respond to a RIT dye bath, nor a walnut dye bath.  They could only be colored with an alcohol based dye like Feibings.

Much as I figured.

I recently noticed this blue gray line on the edge of some leather that I have.
What causes it?
