How big do Lugs on pistol barrels have to be?

I've put 2 lugs on a 15/16, 12"long, GM, oct, barrel. The lugs are made of 0.04" folded brass and are 10mm long (about 3/8"). Would it be safe on the next barrel to make the lugs 5mm long(about 3/16")? This would give me better room to mount the front rr thimble.

Rolf,
You could do the lugs smaller but why would you want to. I find that even as many times as I have drilled those little suckers they will often surprise you as to where they actually get drilled through. I am afraid that you would not be happy with having missed the tab on a 3/16th under lug or just caught the edge of it. I have seen originals with smaller tabs on then but they were filed down after the fact I believe.

I agree with Dave above, you reach a point where it just might be too small.   If it interferes with your front ramrod pipe, move it so that doesn't happen.  It all requires some pre-planning...............Don

I'm presently cleaning a Type G (Carolina Gun) barrel that was found in the Apalachicola River recently and am amazed at how small the underlugs are and how well they were able to hit their mark.  I suppose they could've been filed down after drilling, but I don't have the stock to judge that.
