I have one of these fine fowlers and love it! It really isn't too difficult to align that front sight with the centre of the barrel flat at the wedding band, but having a tang screw slot in the centre of the tang and visible in your peripheral vision helps with sighting too.
Case hardening compound is available - some here have acquired it. I use a commercial powder called "Hard and tough" which came from a saw mill many many years ago. One simply polishes the part, heats it red/orange in a propane flame, immerses it in the powder, and then heats it up again to orange, holding it at that heat to let the carbon soak into the steel. I do that cycle twice, and then immerse the hot piece into water at room temp. I use a wire wheel at high speed in my drill press to remove the crud that sticks, and get a polished dark grey part that will scratch a file. I don't temper these parts, ie: screws, bolts, tumbler bridles, (anything that was mild steel previously). Don't case harden flint cock top jaw screws on Chambers' locks unless you temper them back to dark straw or even dark blue. They are high carbon and will shatter with the treatment I described.
