I finally finished most of the fowler previously mentioned on this forum. It took all winter and most of spring to substantially finish because I was scared blankless of soldering the lugs on and wreaking the barrel, since I have never soldered lugs/sights on before. This caused a delay in the "procrastination" process and I finally decided to make a dummy barrel section on my lathe and practice on that until I became confident with the process. The soldering turned out to be easier than I thought it would be and I managed to get full lug solder joints with nice solder fillet reinforcement around each lug/sight. AND I managed to get them in the correct place! Once the soldering was done I was on familiar territory except for the one-piece silver muzzle cap that I wanted to install ( I have already posted pictures of the result ).................I am very happy with the result but it was a nail biter to the end.

The gun is quite light and balances very well considering that it has a 46 inch barrel. I really am very pleased with the gun overall. Jim Chambers provided me with a very good kit. One surprise was the walnut stock. I used Truoil on it and under fluorescent light when finished  it looked black/grey/greenish.........awful. In daylight it is a very dark brown with a lot of black in it. It looks really quite attractive though different from the other walnut stocks I have completed. All black walnut evidently is not the same.

After much "procrastination" I have decide to finish the barrel with brass black taken down with 0000 steel wool. I have experimented with it and I very much like the finish it produces prototypical or not. It is only about an hours work to do this finish as the barrel is completely polished bright.I know some will say this is not the thing to do but the only other process that appealed to me requires pitting the barrel which I cannot bring myself to do. With the barrel treated and pins trimmed to length and some polishing, the gun will be "completely" complete.

I purchased a wax kit that I will use to make the pins/holes disappear as I can mix colors to match any region of the stock.

Come fall my JC fowler will be my turkey gun.

One double bacon cheese burger coming up! ( I should explain the hair cut. I got it cut for Christmas and left it uncut until after a minor surgical procedure at the end of January then came covid 19 and that put a stop to barber shop visits for I don't know how long..............so I haven't had a hair cut since BEFORE Christmas! I think I'll keep it that way. It gives me that extinguished look and think of the money I'll save.)

Nice work indeed!
My hair is getting so long I'm thinking of cutting it myself.  I think I've saved enough to afford a good pair of scissors.

Crazy thing about Americans........ The attitude of..... nobody can tell me to wear a mask!  I guess that’s how we thin the herd!
By the way, nice job on the Fowler.

Really nice job on that PA fowler Sir.  If I may suggest:   your tang screw appears to be a little proud...could use a little more countersinking, and polish the head to remove the boogered slot damage.  I case harden all the screws that get removed regularly, and it really makes a difference in their longevity.

Also, I'd finish polishing the lock...the back of the cock looks as cast in your picture.

Thanks for your comments all!

I plan to put a polished steel side plate(ordered from JC) in place of the brass and will polish the lock bright at that time. They should look good against the dark stock. The tang screw will be cleaned up but I want to leave it a bit proud to see if it helps with sighting/accuracy as I have never shot round ball without a rear sight. I don't have the equipment to case harden but I will look into it as I think case hardening frequently accessed screws is a very good idea (never occurred to me to do it).

Thanks again!

PS. No one that I know nor anyone in my rifle club shoots BP ML so your comments and critique is much appreciated!!

I have one of these fine fowlers and love it!  It really isn't too difficult to align that front sight with the centre of the barrel flat at the wedding band, but having a tang screw slot in the centre of the tang and visible in your peripheral vision helps with sighting too.

Case hardening compound is available - some here have acquired it.  I use a commercial powder called "Hard and tough" which came from a saw mill many many years ago.  One simply polishes the part, heats it red/orange in a propane flame, immerses it in the powder, and then heats it up again to orange, holding it at that heat to let the carbon soak into the steel.  I do that cycle twice, and then immerse the hot piece into water at room temp.  I use a wire wheel at high speed in my drill press to remove the crud that sticks, and get a polished dark grey part that will scratch a file.  I don't temper these parts, ie:  screws, bolts, tumbler bridles, (anything that was mild steel previously).  Don't case harden flint cock top jaw screws on Chambers' locks unless you temper them back to dark straw or even dark blue.  They are high carbon and will shatter with the treatment I described.

Good stuff Taylor. I'll try and source some case hardening materials. (Found it at Brownells)

thanks.

Very nice work. Was wondering....was the stock inlet for the trigger guard or left blank for you to inlet? Thanks.

With regard to trigger guard inletting ,it was not pre-inlet. It is better this way because the trigger guard casting is often bent slightly. If it is pre-inlet you have to wrestle with the trigger guard and bend it VERY precisely .....difficult......done it.
