sight height formula

Years ago I saw a formula for estimating the height of the front sight.  Just a ballpark number to start out with.  I cannot find it anywhere.  Anyone recollect what it might be?

I measure it calculate the height of the top of the rear sight above the bore, subtract about 0.025”, make the top of the rear sight that high above the bore, and go from there.

I have a calculator (an Excel spreadsheet) that you can download from my web site.  It is the spreadsheet that I used to set my sight heights.   It usually got me in the rings at 50 yards with the first shot.

Seems to me, when putting sights on a rifle, I always started with them equal height above the centre of the bore,
 then did any filing necessary at the range after working up a load.
