Bullet drop
« on: November 27, 2020, 01:11:47 AM »
Here is a case where a little bullet drop might be a good thing.  Two days before the opener of the PA season.  He and a small group of doe came in to entertain us while we had Thanksgiving dinner.  It is good to live in the country.

Good picture, lucky.  Reminded me of a friend with an old man's blind on a small field in the corner of his farm.  The field is marked off out in front of the blind, with 25, 50 and 100yard target butts as it is 100 x 100yards, pretty much square.
It's an old man's blind as it is insulated and has a 20pound tank propane heater with side to side shooting bench, left and right handed 'ports' with sand bags and an adjustable shooting rest. It is kinda the shape of a truck's camper with a camo cover running side to side out the front "window" when it's open.
Deer, elk and moose frequent this field of alfalfa and grains, as planted.

I hunted from a similar one that was elevated on piles about 12 feet.  It was on a farm in WV.  Saw no deer but did see bear.

I sat in this one for a day, some years back. The field was in oats, and had 6 doe Muley's feeding around, then they bedded down right in front of the blind.  They jumped up and
left the field, up the little hill to the right side and a ROUND black bear waddled in from the left side. He fed around in the oats, stood right beside the 100 yard target frame for a while, then
he must have seen movement inside the blind. He walked right up, stood up and looked into the muzzle of my 14 bore rifle. He was just a little round fat 3 year old.  I had a bear tag & he would have been good eating, but I had orders not to shoot BoBo. Quinn's mother in law had dibs on him for her Christmas pasteries. Quinn and his farther in law collected BoBo the next week.
I was hoping for a whitetail buck, but none showed up, just the muley does.

Bears are "funny", I guess that's why I like them so much.  The one we saw from that (heated den room on stilts) was the same one, I'm pretty sure, that came up in our faces (to say "howdy") the next afternoon while my partner and I were sitting on the ground next to a tree.  Couldn't tell at first if he even had legs!  Fattest bruin I've ever seen.

This one actually waddled and giggled all over as he moved.
Now, this was only a 2 or 3 year old and they got 5 gallons of fat from him.

That sounds like one of those OPEC bears with all that oil. My fall bear last year gave me over two gal. but I just stopped rendering at that point.

I'm sure that wasn't rendered oil or fat, but was the raw material, filling a 5 gallon pail.
That little fella's belly was rubbing the stuble. He looked like a 45 gallon drum with little pegs
for legs sticking out, barely reaching the ground.
