This is the tang to date. It still needs shading and some recutting to make the pattern pop.
Cheers Richard

Hi Richard,
Tom White (Transfer Magic) makes a solution that has a white pigment.  It is mainly lacquer and acetone I believe with the pigment added.  It provides really nice contrast to black lines.  I also use the same transparency film and have an HP 6700 inkjet printer.

Dave, Daryl thanks a lot for the kind words.
Dave, I have not tried Tom Whites white solution yet. I did try Dykem’s white marking fluid but I forgot how it worked out. I may try it again. You did give me an idea. Using white acrylic artist paint from a tube that’s thinned with  alcohol and adding some rosin may work. I’ll let you know if it works. The nice thing about the transfer solution that I described in the previous post is that it is very thin and you barely notice it when your engraving.
Cheers Richard

Hi Richard,
Here is a photo using Tom White's Transfer Magic with a white pigment.  The engraving design is inspired by and original gun by Twigg.  I still have to add shaing and more borders.

Thanks for posting the photos of Tom’s white transfer fluid. I think he may have a sample size I could order. Your engraving looks great and I look forward to seeing the butt plate when the engraving on it is done. My engraving is going slow…like everything else for me. Engraved most of the shell on the tang yesterday. I wish I had started engraving sooner as the more I engrave the more I like it.

Those tassels on the rye or hay really add to the overall appearance. VERY nice. Loving it. ;D

The finished product is looking pretty awesome, Richard!  Your sunburst on the finial is really nice, great work.

Richard,

I may have missed it along the way if you mentioned it. But are you using hammer and chisel or air graver for your engraving?

Your work is exceptional and inspiring.

Thank you for the kind words fellows!
Brian, most all of my engraving is with the Lindsay pneumatic hand piece. Some of the light fine work is with a palm graver.
Curtis, below is another photo of the sunburst. I’m thinking that my borders sometimes are too thick, as is the border around the sunburst.
Thanks again, cheers Richard

Thanks Richard. I'm just getting into engraving with hammer and chisel. I'm already saving my nickels and dimes for a Lindsey air graver.

Thanks for the closeup, Richard!  It looks even better the more that it can be seen!

Just my opinion, but I think your border widths look just dandy.

MANY years ago I tried engraving and was able to engrave a banner around my name when I signed my last name on the outside of the lock plate and  a scalloped border along the edges of the plate.I don't know if any of these locks survive or not.I made an engraving tool from a small, square file

Thanks Curtis!

Bob, would you happen to haven any photos of those old locks of yours? They sure are pretty.

Brian, if you decide on a book, this is the one I would recommend, a bit pricey but imho it has a lot of info that is illustrated. Excellent photography of contemporary flint and caplocks engraved by the author and othe top tier engravers.

Below some of my manual tools. In the center is a Lindsay SS handle with Lindsay’s graver installed. I’d recommend getting Lindsay’s sharpening fixtures as they make getting the proper graver angles easy to achieve and the’re repeatable. If you have any questions let me know.

You’re welcome Brian.
Finished one rosette on the buttplate. The upper rosette will be a bit more involved to layout due too the dome shaped surface of the upper screw hole…
