Ambrose Lawing 3/4 stock (almost finished)
« on: January 31, 2021, 03:57:12 AM »
The Ambrose Lawing East Tennessee ¾ stock rifle is almost there. I need to apply a couple more coats of oil, do a bit more burnishing to soften up a few more lines and adjust some of the distressing.  Getting oil to dry in the Pacific Northwest during the rainy month of January will definitely test one’s patience. Looking forward to putting a few rounds through this one and calling it good.

Oh yeah Dave. She’s a beaut. Did you make her for someone or will she just be collecting dust over at your place?

Right now she is a designated dust collector.  This project was a lesson in restraint.  It was harder for me to keep within the confines of Mr. Lawing than had I given myself free reins to take artistic liberties.  She needs about two more weeks in my shop getting loved and rubbed to give it that warm glow.  That will take me right up to the Lake Cumberland show.  I plan on dragging her out to that show.

How do you find the gun amongst all that cleanliness?

Beautiful lines to this one. Is a 3/4 stock really a thing, or a work around for damage on the original?

Beautiful gun.  Love that tang.   I don't see that barrel with the long tang coming out of the gun for cleaning via the flush method in a bucket!!!!

That's a pretty little rifle Dave.  I'm always blown away by how thin and fragile looking that toe is.  Too, it amazes me how much you accomplish obviously losing a lot of time keeping your shop clean and organized.

I try to make it a habit, emphasis on the word "try" to clean up between projects.  Hosting a workshop on Tuesday evening's cuts into my building time as I try to at least clean of a couple of work stations for the guys.
You are correct on the difficulty in finding stuff in a clean shop.  I initial reaction is to look for a tool at the last place I used it, then if I can't find it, I go to the tool box or pegboard.

The jury is definitely still out on these rifles.  I have heard them called 1/2 stocks, 3/4 stocks and yes, originally a full stock that was cut back due to a broken forestock.  I think all three scenarios are plausible.

David,
Great job on an extraordinary rifle and great ideas on how it came to be the way it is! Wish you were closer with your workshops. Keep up the great work!
