I built one years ago it went together well and handled great. If recall though it was a 60 cal. when they came out with it.

That is a fine looking rifle with very refined lines, carving and engraving. May I ask how much was the asking price.
Thank you, Richard

This was a bespoke rifle, .58 caliber.  I think it was $3200.    The load here was .562 cast balls, .021 blue/white pillow ticking and 80 grains of Goex 2F, 50 yards from rest.  The rifle went to Texas.  Here is some more engraving on a Lancaster (I think it is), a .50 caliber,  that also went to Texas.

Blue bonnets and a sterling silver star.

Woodsrunner  Jordan,
I'll do my best but outside photos are a bit miserable at present.  30 to 40 below still...

This from Jim's page;

"Historically this rifle is closely derived from an original rifle of the James River Basin area of Virginia. The original rifle may date from as early as the 1740's and quite probably was used by a member of Morgan's Riflemen during the Revolutionary war. This type of rifle would have been used along the frontier during conflicts such as the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars and as a tool of daily life by settlers and "longhunters" of the mid-to-late 18th century and early 19th century.

Stylistically the rifle shows a subtle blending of British and German influences, typical of Southern rifles. The long tang buttplate derives from English fowlers while the decorative finials of the rifle style guard show German and French influences. This blending of styles is evident in the stock architecture as well, the classic English wrist balustration flowing into the prominent and effective Germanic cheek piece.

The round faced British export lock is typical of many Southern rifles of the period, its large size and excellent geometry assure fast reliable ignition, as important today as during the 18th century".

I trust Jim will not mind me attaching the above.
Being an early rife, possibly even as early as the 1740's, makes the sliding patchbox very plausable.
For this reason, I did not add a nosecap either, on mine.
Pictures of this rifle from Jim's site;

https://www.flintlocks.com/RK-08.htm

Edited to add that the way this rifle comes up to the shoulder and eye and fits the cheek, it is a great pleasure, even after handling it for 20 -odd years.    It is a lovely rifle.

Pukka- Jims description and photos were what led me to ask the Patchbox question when I noticed others building it with metal instead of wood. My guess is either is appropriate and, as with many great builds, up to personal preference. Don't freeze yourself on my part taking pictures! I can wait.

I built one of the Chambers kits in 60 caliber. It is a well balanced gun but I think it would be heavy in smaller calibers. For me this is about as long of a barrel as I want. I know longrifle means LONG barrels. My gun had a fantastic piece of wood which should have been an upgrade but barrel channel was cut too wide on one side. I had to add wood along the side which was an interesting challenge but you'd never know it now. I had an awful time finding a mold for the 60 caliber. I ended up with a .586 mold that got the gun shooting.  I think this Mark Silver's Virginia rifle is a nice gun but I prefer lighter shorter guns like the Isaac Haines style.

577SXS- I was debating between both the Haines an the Silver  kits. What sold me on the Silver is the buttstock architecture and the large cal availability.

Woodsrunner, you can get the Haines in 58 and 62 caliber. I have both and love them. The stock shapes are very similar. To me the Haines is more of a hunting gun.

Personal preference, 577.   This part is where Woodsrunner has to make the choice.
My choice was the Mark Silver, and I only hunt with this one, But, it's like buying a picture for someone to hang on the wall. Art is very subjective.

Art is very subjective. In my case, as 577SxS said: longrifle means LONG. I'm comfortable in the knowledge that the M.S. rifle kit is what I'm seeking. Now I just need to squirrel away alittle more scratch and make a phone call to Mr. Chambers.

Woodsrunner,
when i decided to get this kit, I hadn't got the money, but Decided to get it. Once that decision was made, some stuff had to leave to pay for it! LOL.
Never regretted it.

The Mark Silver's Virginia is a really nice rifle and you won't be disappointed in it. I like mine even though I like other styles better. It's all in what you like! Here are a few photos of my Mark Silver's Chambers kit and a Haines I built from a precarved blank. You can see there really isn't a lot of difference in the two. The length of pull is longer on my Haines because I need a long LOP. The trigger guard on the MS gun has been changed.

Stoner creek- I was just about to ask that! They're beautifully executed.

577SXS- THOSE are both gorgeous looking rifles. Which triggerguard did you put on the M.S.?

Woodsrunner79, I took the trigger guard that came with kit and brazed a piece in then cut the finger rail out. I don't like finger rails. I also have another trigger guard like the one that came with kit fitted to gun. This way if I ever sell gun buyer can use either one.

Stoner creek, Yes my patch boxes are just carved into wood. Never really liked patch boxes either but I'm starting to think about doing a real one on my current build.

Great job! You completely fooled me at first glance. I thought “how tough would it be to match 2 perfectly?”.
Ya got me thinking again!

The guard on the Mark Silver as it comes is to me the most comfortable I've handled, so again, its all in the eye and hand of the beholder /handler!  :-)

Taylor's Virginia holds very nicely, for a long rifle, that is. ;D ::)
