Paneled Horn With Two Part Pewter Screw Tip
« on: February 24, 2021, 07:31:59 PM »
It is about 16" around the outside curve 3" of that is the butt and the tip and collar are another 3". The butt is Walnut and is hollowed out about half way through, it is about 2 1/2" and held by 3 Iron pins that are covered by the band that is held with 8 wooden pegs. It is after a design on the cover of Dr. Hopkins' book "Bone Tipped & Banded Horns Pt I", it is also on pages 224-225.  The tip is a two part made of Pewter, threaded 5/8-11, the collar is threaded through with the same. The horn itself has 8 panels filed/scrapped on it. The color if AF with some Brown shoe polish.

That’s another beauty, Tim!  Did you turn the pewter on your wood lathe?  Any idea what speed?

Sleek looking horn.  Outstanding work as normal.  The pewter tip is cool.

Cheers,
Ken

She's a looker Tim.  Nice lines, and the turned pewter tip is a luxurious addition.  The bold base plug really makes it jump out however.  Nice finishes too.   Definitely an upscale composition.  God Bless,   Marc

Beautiful job Tim, as usual.  Nice blend of wood to horn to metal and the color is pleasing .  Well done.

Boy, that must have been a lot of work.   Well done as always.   How did you do the tip; cast and turn or turn from solid stock?

Greg

I turn everything, wood, horn, antler, pewter at the same speed, about 600 RPMs and yes it was done on a wood lathe with wood turning tools.

Mark, instead of going into it here I made a separate post on how I did the tip. You are right it was a lot of work.
