Good size lock for a southern pistol
« on: May 19, 2021, 04:49:57 PM »
Howdy gents, I'm going to get started on a southern pistol I've been sitting on for a while.  .40 caliber tapered barrel, I think made by Dave Rase.  It's in a piece of walnut.  I'm a lefty but will build it right (wrong) handed. What would be a good sized english style lock to use for a pistol?  I'm used to using the left hand manton and Cochran's for my rifles but never used any right hand locks in guns except the large siler....obviously too big for a pistol.  Recommendations please!

I just finished this pistol using the L&R Bailes lock. I really like it....it's a fast little lock that doesn't jar the pistol at all really.

The Chambers or Kibler Late Ketland would be a good choice,
I think L&R makes a small Manton/Bailes left handed lock but
don't know about current quality contol.

Top lock is the Bailes, bottom is the Kibler. Both are the same length, the Kibler is a bit deeper. Building one now with the Bailes that has Mr. Rollers internals, gonna be hard to find one of those!

I built this Verner pistol last year using a Stan Hollenbaugh lock.  The lock has a facetted pan like a Siler (German) lock, but I Englished it by rounding the pan.  Turned out nice.

I don't know how many of the L&R based Bailes locks I made and have given
brief thought reviving the idea but now think they are too labor intensive so
that won't happen.I made a good number of a very similar lock for a German
shop that made a Boutet copy using them.I got the moulds from TOW in 1978
or 79 and a few years ago gave them to Les Barber and Larry Zornes for their
Mould&Gun Shop.I don't know if they developed anything from them or not.
I used only the external parts on these locks as well as the Durs Egg and the
Ashmore. The last two flintlocks I made were Durs Egg and one had a reenforced
cock and IS one of a kind and delivered them to their buyer at the 2019 CLA
Show in Lexington with double set triggers. At this point in time the only things
I am making are the double set triggers and they are on a limited basis and
may be discontinued at the end of this year as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

It is very helpful to see the locks on a pistol.  I'll decide between the Bailes or Chambers.  I've used the Bailes multiple times on left hand rifles and it has always performed well, especially after Brad Emig gave them a tuning.  I'm curious to use the chambers as everyone I know that has one has raved about it.
