Not Quite HC
« on: January 26, 2022, 12:35:02 AM »
I am assembling one of Jim K's SMRs for a friend who requested a sideplate shaped like our home province.  In his words, "the rifle does not have to be historically correct - just Bill correct".  The experience was one to make a body wish he did not live on a peninsula - and one I have no desire to repeat.  Some final fitting and cleanup remain and I will likely have to replace the screws.  The ones in the pix are old flat head screws I have reshaped.  They are soft and the slots are too wide.
Oskar Kob, another close friend, will color case harden the lock and the sideplate.  For those who have not heard of  Oskar, he is one of the pre eminent color case hardeners in North America.  There are numerous examples of Oskar's work on the internet.

I will post pic of the rifle when it is finished.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Looks like a duck's head, with badly shot up wings outstretched and bottom half of the body blown off.
Yup - nifty. ;)

You must be the Y.T. bluenoser, it looks like NS to me. I have a camp on Ponhook Lake in Labelle, it's on the member map. I just finished a Kibler SMR in plain maple 45 cal. After bumping the sights around and filing a bit off the front sight I was able to bring it on target and get a 2" group at 50 yards,  which is not bad for my old eyes. Have fun with the build. Looks like we have similar hobbies.

I was thinking of a duck getting ready to catch a wave.

I would put this style of sideplate in the "hysterically" correct category.  :)

Soon as I saw it, I thought of NS.  Would love to visit there, lots of history.

Well, if a map of NS was going to be on there, you did a fine job with shaping and inletting. No one can fault your craftsmanship. Best wishes and God Bless, Marc

Yep, that duck needs to be in the roaster.  His left wing is in shambles   ::)  I'd have said No, as in "Oh $#*! No !"  8)

BTW, you did a nice inletting job on it though.   ;)

Hi,
Some map-like engraving that helps define the shape and identifies it as NS would improve it a lot.

Sometimes you just have to tell the customer “No!”

As one firmly anchored in the HC camp, I quite forcefully voiced my negative opinion regarding this and a couple other features on the build.  I also agreed to do it, if that was what he really wanted after giving the matter a little more thought.  I believe it would be the height of arrogance to force my opinion/standards on others.  I am honored that he asked me to do the build - even if he doesn’t always follow my advice.

Some interesting observations here.  I see the duck, and maybe even a surfing duck.  I just might suggest that Bill name his new rifle Daffy ;D

That is an interesting observation worthy of some thought.  I cannot quite picture what it might look like.  Engraving is beyond my scope of ability and would have to be done before the CCH.

Doing stuff like this will ruin your reputation as a serious gun maker. I've always found it easy to turn away work that is distasteful.

Same here and no offense but I thought it was a duck ran over by a pickup truck.  Either way it is inletted nicely for sure.

I recognized it right off. I would have opened up Mahone Bay a little more and put Oak Island in there.
My impression of NS from touring and camping all around it a few years ago, is it was a LOT like Michigan's Upper Peninsula back in the 50s & 60s!

:o Methinks putting Oak Island in there would have been about as butt tightening as including the Digby Gut.

Beg to differ - wrong shape of head.
