Nice work as usual. Love the carving.

Thanks, everyone, for the interest and comments.

Frozen Run…, I used Sutherland Welles polymerized tung oil.  Dave (Smart Dog) did some nice write ups on this product, and I’ve used it on a few rifles, and really like the results as well.  I also like Tried & True a lot.  Appearance wise, I don’t know if there’s a big difference.  T&T probably dries a little slower, although it helps greatly if you can get it exposed to sunlight, and apply VERY sparingly.  I’ve found both to be very good finishes.

Tom…, good to hear from you, and thanks.  I built this rifle for someone else, and the Albrecht / Shawanoe Chief connection was what they were looking for.  The engraving on the butt piece comb allegedly speaks to that connection.  There’s way more people here who would know more about that than me.  Personally, I’m not really attracted to the design / engraving depicted on the butt piece comb, inspired from the original, but that’s just me.  I don’t mean to be snooty, and totally get the historical aspect, just not a big appeal to me.

Hey Taylor…, I know what you mean…, I’m presently finishing up another similar rifle.  Love the style!

Thanks again…, best,

Beautiful!  I love the burlap backdrop for the pics.  Great idea.

Beautiful work Ed.  I really like how you transitioned from relief to incised carving on the entry pipe tail, and the patchbox lid design has always been one of my favorites, yours is outstanding.

Beautiful rifle, Mr. Wenger. Gee whiz, I think Edward Marshall himself wouldn't have minded to carry your rifle!

That's really nice work, Ed.  This is just a preference, probably because of the original Marshall rifle, but a little warmer (amber, orange, yellow) color might be nice.  But like I said, this might just be due to the fact I have the original in my head.  Regardless, beautiful job!

Thanks, Jim…, and I totally agree.  After the iron nitrate, I used some trans tint brown to darken it because it was much too light.  After that, I used amber tint, which gave it more golden undertones.  In retrospect, I wish I had scrubbed it a little more after the brown tint, and probably should have added more amber.  I don’t think the photos do the color any justice, but don’t want to make excuses, and your point is well taken.  Great videos, by the way, on staining!  Best,

Ed, it is wonderful to see you back on the forum, and especially when you are displaying your superb workmanship.

Icing on the cake for me - I had been looking for a good example of a fleur-de-lis to put on the tang of this TC Hawken kit that I am assembling.  Just a little decoration for decoration's sake.  AND you had exactly what I was looking for!

Many thanks!
