Newest Southern Mountain Rifle
« on: May 26, 2022, 09:31:15 PM »
Here is my latest Southern Mountain rifle; built from a blank.

The barrel is Colerain’s B weight, 44” swamped, in .50 caliber, with their standard rifling.  The lock is a Jim Chambers Late Ketland, and the double set triggers are my own.  I perform all the work myself, and I make all of the iron furniture.  But I do buy all my bolts, screws, touch hole liners, and finishing supplies.  The stock is a nice piece of Red maple, and has not been sanded, but scraped and burnished.  I stained the wood with Aquafortis, followed by Laurel Mountain Forge's Maple stain.  The final finish is about 10 coats of Permalyn Sealer.   Drop to heel is 3 ½”.  Length of pull is 13 ½”.  And cast-off is 3/16”.

This rifle is number nine from a blank for me.  I think she turned out pretty good.  And she has a new home to go to.

That is beautiful! Curious about your metal treatment, specifically the lock. I’m currently building my first from a blank and love how yours is treated.

Thanks Wingshot.

I treated the metal with Historic House Parts' brass  tarnishing solution.  I bought it from Jim Kibler a while back; and I'm pretty sure it's what he used prior to his current offering.  I imagine they're pretty much the same chemically.

Looks great. I’ve got one in the works whenever I get back to the shop. Too many weeds that need my attention right now.

I like the overall presentation but really like your forge work.  Nice looking trigger set also.  Very nice.

Cool beans man. I didn't know anybody made those from a plank anymore.

I use a special scale called the Scale of Dandiness to grade rifles I see.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with one being the least dandy, and 10 being the dandiest of all, this rifle rates a solid 10/10.

I really like this rifle.  The color of the wood is exactly what I would go for if I made one, not too dark, not too light.  It's classic all around.
