Brass Patchbox on Kibler Colonial
« on: July 26, 2022, 06:39:30 AM »
Jim had some great deals on stocks and hardware when I was at the open house last month that didn't quite make his quality standards, I got a great deal on a Colonial stock and proper barrel and some assorted hardware. Though he listed them as seconds, the defects, whatever they might be, are so minor they won't interfere with what I want to do with them. Thinking about buying and or making the rest of what I need to assemble it. The question I have is that the stock I purchased was never cut for the wood patchbox, I could go ahead and do this, but was wondering what style brass box might fit into the period this rifle represents. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The Colonial butt plates on his seconds table are already cut for a sliding patchbox. Were you planning on using a different butt plate or were you able to score one without the dovetail already cut into the plate?

Hi 44-Henry,
Assuming you can make the butt plate work with a brass box, this would be a good choice for a Kibler.  It is attributed to Dickert but I believe Fainot did the engraving.

There is an early Dickert shown in RCA 1 with a similar but simpler box that would also look nice.

I wasn't there in time to get a butt plate, but picked up the triggerguard, and assorted other parts. The Dickert box you show was the one I was hoping would be correct, I have always liked that one. I remember the post you made on yours which turned out very nice.  Thank you.

Many of the Pboxes on Lancasters are the "Daisy Heads" which I find kinda boring, so looked hard and long and found some by Lancaster builder, John Brooks. Shown below is a close simulation of one of his and used it on a few Lancasters. ......Fred

We offer the butt plate without a notch for the sliding wood box lid.  Just let us know and we can help you out.

Certainly not as beautiful as others do, but I have put a few brass patch boxes on the Kibler Colonial (screaming out for the engraver's handiwork) They seem really comfortable on that broad buttstock.

44-Henry,

Maybe the Dickert side opener on RCA #66?
