Turpentine quality
« on: August 09, 2022, 11:59:58 PM »
As I'm struggling with a couple of goofs on my buttplate inlet, I'm thinking about wood finishes.

I have a plan for what I'll do and it involves gilsonite and turpentine. I'm not seeing any local sources that are obviously 100% pure turpentine. I'm surprised woodcraft does not carry it. But, Lowe's has Jasco turpentine and the SDS says 70% alpha pinene, which I believe is a component of turpentine, and 30% gum spirits turpentine.

My gilsonite is a high quality pigment that came from Natural Pigments. Mined just a few hours from me!

Has anyone used this turps brand in combination with gilsonite or roofing tar and has satisfactory results in dissolving it?

If not, any suggestions for stores that would carry pure turpentine?

Get your turp from an art supply house, Dick Blick is the best I know. If it smells sour it is junk, turp should smell nice. Our friends overseas distill stumps and who knows what else and pass it off as turp. I guess we don't make it here anymore. Forget the big box stores and it will cost more.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into that wood finishing enterprises. I was primarily trying to find a local shop with some so I can avoid shipping costs.

I didn't think about dick blick... There is a shop in town and they carry Utrecht turp, which says it's 100% gum spirits turp.  So there is at least one option here.

https://www.naturalpigments.com/gilsonite-asphaltum-pigment.html

They have a lot of good information on the history of asphaltum, bitumen, and the difference between those and gilsonite.

Is there any reason to use a good turpentine rather than mineral sprits? What are the advantages of using turpentine?

Yes, this is the one I found a while back. Get the stuff from the source-to heck with mixed up sauce in the supply chain.

Yes, their drying profiles are different and the turpentine mix with the oil is a different viscosity.  In the end they probably look about the same but turpentine or alcohol are period solvents.
kind regards, heinz
