Muzzleloader Builders Supply Oerter butt plate
« on: December 01, 2022, 10:36:31 AM »
Muzzleloader Builders Supply has two Oerter-style butt plates, both 1 5/8 inch wide.  I like the one with the thumbnail design.....but....is 1 5/8 " wide enough for an "early" rifle?  I understand there is a lot of leeway in 'early' firearms, Virginia, Colonial, what ever, but I was under the impression that the butt plate should be w-i-d-e, like 2 inches or so.
Any advice will be appreciated.  Thanks.

That cannot be Oerter-style. You’re right, it needs to be 2” or more.
