.45 P. Harris
« on: December 03, 2022, 06:57:55 PM »
Hello from Georgia, thank you for adding me to the group. I'm a 24 year old history enthusiast looking to do a bit of 18th century reenactment.

I recently purchased my first rifle ever and was looking to see if i could find anymore info.  I believe the lock is an older dixie gunworks from belgium based on what i've read, totally clueless to the rest. I'm really not even sure what exact time period/region this is based off of. If anyone could point me towards some lituature on the different styles of rifles that would be amazing.

I appreciate any feedback and look forward to learning more about the hobby.

Welcome to the forum! The style of your rifle looks to be more of a "generic" Kentucky rifle made after 1800. That lock hasn't been available for some time.  The builder probably sourced the other parts from Dixie also and didn't adhere to a particular "school". Most importantly. Are you getting a good spark? How does it shoot?  There are many publications for the beginner depending on your area of intertest. ....LK

Hello all, thank you for the kind welcome. I have still not fired the rifle. I used to be able to find blackpowder locally but no luck now. It does throw a good spark right in the pan, so my hopes are high. I've been going through the website and learning a lot.

Yours is a lot nicer than my first FIE flintlock in 1972.

I visited P. Harris at his shop in Buffalo Mills, Pa. to see his work in 1970.
He was building a .45 cal. flinter for a friend from Geneseo N.Y. It was very
good quality.

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I've really been enjoying the rifle. Thank you yamahahn for the information. Super happy to find out those details about the maker. Plan on keeping it for a long long time.
