A California Halfstock Rifle
« on: May 04, 2023, 03:53:55 AM »
I'm mostly a lurker on this forum but I thought I'd share this rifle that I bought from Track of the Wolf back in February. It's quickly become one of my favorites.

Track described it as a California rifle. It's appears to be styled after rifles built by Slotter & Co. of Philadelphia, PA and sold through retailers like AJ Plate in San Francisco during the 19th Century. The barrel is 34" x 15/16", .50 caliber, with a 1:60 twist, and was made by Jim Goodoein. The stock is Claro walnut with German silver mounts and a poured pewter nosecap. The lock is an L&R.

It's a very nice shooter. I used it in a few woods walks at the Boulder Valley Sportsmans' Assoc. and Boyertown Rod & Gun Club, both in PA, and did well. I may use it during PA's early antlerless-only deer season this fall.

I forgot to note that I found this signature under the buttplate.

Beautiful rifle! I watched that on tracks web site. I live in northern ca (gold country) and would love to have a California rifle someday.

I just finished collecting the parts for a Charles Slotterbeck rifle. Hopefully I will get it done before Christmas.

I would love to see your rifle when it's complete.

I have been really impressed with this rifle. The stock is perfectly designed for offhand shooting. Just the right amount of drop to place my eye right behind the sights when I shoulder it, and the LOP fits me well.

Looks like someone tested a magic marker. That is a nice rifle and I made a similar one about 50 years ago minus the cap box.

That looks like a nice offhand rifle.
