For us guys who could not make it to CLA
« on: August 16, 2008, 09:17:58 PM »
Reading all the ALR posts building up to the CLA show and reading the new ones written by those who were blessed enough to attend CLA  lead me to ask the question, "what are you guys that did not get to go to CLA doing this weekend?"

So far I have forged out and filed up the butt plate for my Tulle.  I will inlet it this afternoon.  I spent last night working on updating the web page for the Honourable Company of Horners.  Yes, I volunteered to take over the web site after making a remark that it had not been updated for about 3 years.  What a challenge since I am not a "Geek" by trade.  I am finally feeling comfortable navigating through the program and hope to have the updated web page published next week.  I need my oldest daughter to come by and work on the color scheme.  I am terrible with matching colors.  Sunday, if the butt plate is inlet I will go back to work on the web page.

Next weekend is the Washington Historical Gunmakers Guild annual meeting, George Suiter will be our keynote speaker, and then it is off to Hefley Creek on Wednesday.

Had planned to go since first hearing about it.  Company I work for had other plans.  Annual physical inventory.  Thought about driving the 7 hours after work yesterday but, decided to take my wife up to the mountains tomorrow instead.  Sure appreciate the pics Lew and others are sending as I'm new to this passion.  Building an early iron mounted Lancaster w/40 cal swamped "A" Bar'l.  Will plan extra hard to make Dixon's and the CLA next year.

Hi Dave,
I am very envious of those who can attend the CLA show but I am having fun anyway.  I am carving the shells around the tangs of a pair of dueling pistols. They are modeled after Robert Wogden. The burly walnut is difficult to carve but it is fun.

I recycled some junk metal around the house, cleaned up some area in the basement so I can set up a different shop, and now I'm sitting here still bummed that I did not get to go! Kids and their college educations are cutting into my fun funds! I think I'll go get some comfort food (pizza) and a frosty refreshment (or 2).

On the brighter side I was able to buy 4 sandcast buttplates for $26 total today, so things are looking up.

David,

Now if you could just get someone associated with the horner's website to answer their emails, that would be great. Apparently nobody checks the emails sent to the address listed on the website or takes the time to answer them.

I plan to get started Wednesday after work, get half the seven hour drive in the cool of the evening and get up early for the remainder of the journey. That way ya won't be setting up in the heat of the day. Probably be there by 9:00a.m. Thursday. Are you bringing any of the Washinton crowd with you? Can't wait, see ya there!

Working on a couple ordered custom pouches and horns this weekend, had planned to go to Vader and see the guys down there, my truck had other desires and decided to let the side seem of the radiator let loose last night on the way, so my son is replacing it today( owes dad some$, might as well have him work it off) need to get these orders finished so I can finally get back to finishing my rifle thats been out of Dollivers shop now for almost a year, going to try to make it down for the day next sat to Little Rock, see ya then!

Hey Dave Persons!  Thanks for that great pic of your shell carving.  Been looking for one to copy that had the right 'feel' to it.  That pic gives the best detail of the depth.  Maybe pics of finished/oiled stocks don't give quite the detail, nice work!

Randy,
You are exactly right about the e-mail.  When I first received the head nod from the HCH to do the web site the e-mail was backed up to the year 2004.  I emptied the box and I am checking it weekly.  There have only been 3 e-mails since then.  I answered one,  forwarded one to our membership chairman and deleted the other as it was junk mail.  I hope to keep the web page updated on a monthly basis once I get it published.

Leatherbelly,  It will just be me and my wife, or should I say as you Canadians put it, my good wife.  I have been talking with Taylor and look forward to meeting up with you and the rest of your clan.

Gun-wise, I am in the first stages of inletting the butt-plate for my "parts-built" early Southern rifle - I am impressed that anyone could inlet one in an afternoon. This is the first time I have inletted a long-tanged buttplate, and I expect it to take several weeks. :P Also glued a pattern for a spokeshave blade onto a piece of steel - when I get tired of inletting I'll cut it out and start making a blade for a wooden-body spokeshave.

My younger brother, who will be leaving for college Monday, and I went out for lunch today. Apart from that, mostly cleaning up around the house - we are hosting a Korean exchange student, who should be arriving tonight, so there has been a flurry of last minute activity to make the house neat.

Thanks Taylor and you are welcome Tenn Hills Guy,
The shells are modeled after carvings on a fowler by Twigg and another fowler by Henry Nock. Of course for better or worse I always add my own little flair.
The locks are from Blackleys.  It is their LP26 lockplate, which is a casting from an original Wogden pistol.  I went that route because none of the commercially assembled locks have the right profile for Wogden duellers.  I made all the springs and screws.  The locks were a real challenge because of their small size.  There is NO extra metal around the screw holes in the bridle and sear. That situation is made worse because of the small amount of shrinkage during casting using molds made from the original parts. I wanted to use at least 4-40 or 4-48 screws so I had to add a little metal to some of the parts with my welder.  I think if I do it again, I will make my own internal parts with the exception of the sliding safety. One other problem is that they come with the tumbler hole cast in the lockplate.  That is really bad!!.  You cannot get the sides and edges of the hole to be crisp like they are from using a drill.  When you clean them up, the hole is too big for the tumbler.  I solved the problem by installing steel bushings, which worked great but I wish Blackley would let the customer drill the tumbler hole.  Taylor, if you would like I can post some pictures of the internals so you can judge for yourself?

Have a couple more shelves to put up in "the room" then I am going to build a crate to ship a blank and barrel to Dave Rase that will hold a pair for the return trip?  ;)

Never have been able to make it to the CLA show yet.  Spent the time practicing some of the engraving lessons Jerry H taught me.  These are some of the brass parts of a Thompson Center Seneca (this is the fourth one !)

I haven't set foot in the shop since Thursday. Got a big Cowboy shoot coming up Sunday. Friday I spent practicing with 17  retired old cowboy shooters. I hate it when all those old !@#$% kick my ass......we won't even discuss how annoying it is to be humiliated by the women shooters.... :'(
Saturday was spent preparing for Sundays Cowboy shoot and of course mowing the grass, picking corn, feeding chickens , taking a nap ....etc.
