JP Beck by JD Beck 2023
« on: December 24, 2023, 09:02:31 PM »
This rifle has been the culmination of studying original rifles, traveling to meet owners of originals and handling them, as well as museum pieces—I started this project in 2022. The only commercial item ia the Rice Barrel.

I am new to the game and it’s a lot to learn. Hopefully I did my ancestors some justice in this project.
It features a Blank built stock of beautiful hard maple, a custom lock from castings, hand forged trigger, trigger plate, patchbox spring, patchbox lever, and latch. Using sheet brass I made the patchbox, brass pipes, side plate and end cap, Brass trigger guard and buttplate was sandcasted using digital scans of originals, that was 3D printed, and then sandcasted.

A lot of people have assisted me on this journey many of them members of this forum, and you know who you are. So I say thank you! I used as much 18th century tools and techniques as possible—No sandpaper, all hand scraped. Barrel is a 50 caliber, 42 inch, Rice barrel. Lock is Jack Brooks Castings put together by Cody Yoho.

Hi JD,
Great job!  Very plausible as a J P Beck.  By the way, Maria will be back at Ian and Ken's workshop this year.  They persuaded her to come back and she can't stay away.

Well done JD.

That’s awesome she’s phenomenally skilled. I wish I got into it at her age. This year threw a loop for me with my son being in the Nicu for four months, I hope to make it to a class next year.

I appreciate all the positive feedback. I’m already planning the next one, after I practice engraving for some time.
