Need Help Identifying Guns
« on: January 13, 2024, 08:06:42 PM »
Divided up my father-in-laws guns this morning. My brother-in-law picked this one. It's tremendously heavy, huge caliber and huge octagonal smooth bore.
Looks like the lock is stamped 1838. I'm guessing the stock is not original. looks like someone may have just turned it into a conversation piece. I'd love to
know what it was and what is was used for.

The lock is a percussionated late M1816 lock. From the quality of work in converting it, it was done by a contractor, not an Arsenal, after this country went to percussion military muskets. The rest of the gun was a cobble job and not a great job. Possibly a surplus house in the 1870s for sale to poor immigrants.

It is best to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove any and all doubt....
