A friend brought this in for a look. Heavy 54 cal

I was too busy to take a good look. Looked like a faint sig on the barrel

Nice. The M M Maslin Baltimore lock looks original to the rifle.  It almost reminds me of a rifle made for the Militias, except for the heavy barrel. The lock looks unusually long. would like to know more about this one, Thanks for sharing.

I think I have seen a patchbox like that on a trade rifle
The difficult we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer.

Cool muzzle "shot". After enlarging the picture a few times, it appears the grooves and lands are filed out a bit to allow tighter combinations.
That's definitely one way to do it and is done even today, by some makers.
