Swiss?
« on: March 14, 2024, 12:07:09 AM »
I purchased this old rifle years ago and was told it was a Swiss Target rifle .  It’s a .40 caliber swamped barrel 34” and fairly heavy with very shallow rifling . I can’t get a good measurement of the shallow rifling for ROT but it appears to be a fast twist . The lock seems to be a conversion from flint ? Not sure but looks like it to me .the trigger is very fine in build and operation .  Any opinions on age and origin would be welcome.  RW

The tang mounted aperture sight base and grip and guard angle allowing for a heads-up position certainly suggests target rifle.
Small powder charge and maybe a bare ball pounded down the bore with steel rod and mallet as described in the old text in one of Lyman's (I think) loading manuals.

Although I have not shot it in a couple years  . A cast with soft lead bullet .401  180 gr. Over  35 gr. fff  will thumb seat and shoot consistent . Thanks for your comment .
