JJ Henry flintlock . My first flintlock. Questions.
« on: April 07, 2024, 10:57:05 PM »
I just found this rifle.  JJ Henry is on the lock.   Would he be the maker or just the lock maker.  All I see on the barrel is a number.

Is there a cheekpiece on the other side? Is it a smoothbore or is the barrel rifled? In general the maker is indicated on the top flat of the barrel. Unless the lock and the barrel have the same signature or makers mark, I don’t trust the names on locks to indicate who made the gun.

It’s a smooth bore.  The only thing I see on the barrel is a number .   I’ve not taken off the barrel though .   Here’s the other side .

I love the lines of it. Condition is nice too. Enjoy it

Nice architecture.   The Cock & Frizzen & Spring look almost new.  I think it is a contemporary lock.  The gun is old, but the lock is not , in my opinion.

Speaking of that lock ...

I don't think I've ever seen a J. J. Henry lock that wasn't stamped (rather than, as here, engraved).

Has anybody else seen a lock on which the "J. J. Henry" is engraved?

The cock is definitely a "replacement", by the looks of it. The frizzen as well, it appears to me.

No doubt a conversion from percussion to flint, judging from the lock parts and the corrosion on the barrel. Not hard to fix, just time consuming.
But all in all, a very nice looking sort of Lehigh rifle, and congratulations on finding it!
And thanks for showing it here!
