Latest Build finishing up "The Beast"
« on: May 18, 2024, 07:15:36 PM »
This is my latest build finishing up, still a little bit to do.  I call this one "The Beast".  It is inspired by elements of RCA 139 and 142, which are in the section on Longrifles with Military connections.  The rifle is a .66 caliber rifle. The mounts are all modified Brown Bess Mounts.  The lock is a Chambers round faced lock.

What is the weight of it, and have you shot it yet?  (It I should say have you launched a cannonball yet) 🤣

Yeah its sturdy.  I did get to shoot it today, it was very comformtable to shoot.  I did need to file the front sight down a bit.

I just got back from Saskatchewan with my 66 last week and it proved more than adequate ( devistating) on bears.

Hey Cory Joe, just so you know, there’s another Beast in the works!! Ric Lambert is making me a Thomas Simpson rifle in .75 caliber!! It might be ready by CLA. I hope you don’t mind me using that Beast name again. Maybe I can come up with another appropriate name. Ideas welcome y’all!!!!

I have not weighed my rifle yet but its a bit shorter and lighter than yours so you need to get a grip on it. I think the same lock and it works very well. I like your rifle BTW.👍

Back in '86, after my buddy Keith saw the .69 Taylor built me, he ordered  Purdey-styled rifle from Taylor in .75. That one turned out to be moose smasher par excellence. He started out with 200gr. 2F  but couldn't keep a ball inside a moose bull. After reducing the load, year by year to 130gr. he finally had a recovered ball to show us.
Smasher indeed.

Forsyth thought of the 16 bore to be the smallest of the dangerous game calibers.
The point of this post is not to downgrade the 16 bore, but to acknowledge it's superiority over all smaller "gauges" of rifles.
Dangerous game  includes water buffalo. Elephants and tigers as well as bears and old leo.

I don't mind at all.  Sounds like a cool project.
