Muzzle Stamp Tool
« on: May 31, 2024, 03:43:52 AM »
This is not my original idea, and I’m sure a lot of members here have used some variation of it. But it might be helpful to a new builder. It’s simple to make and works nicely. Used this today on a .36 SMR I’m building. Just use a wooden dowel smaller than the diameter of your bore, apply tape to create a snug bore fit, secure your punch to the dowel with tie raps and maybe a little tape, and mark the center of each flat. Just a firm hit with a small hammer will create the dimple. Any bulging around the dimple can be removed with sandpaper backed on a flat file.

Thanks for a great idea and a simple solution.
Have you tried it with a nailset?

Your very welcome. No, never used a nailset but that might give an interesting looking dimple.

That's what I was thinking.  Similar to the pattern seen on some SMRs.  Might have to case-harden the tip.

Great tip! I’m nearing close to the fun part of my SMR build (first ever) and I always liked the look of a stamped muzzle. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this idea. I’ve done them freehand with a nail set on a few rifles over the years. This should make it easier.

That's one of the simple  "Why didn't I think of that" idea's! I have done them free handed for years and all is well until I get cross eyed and stamp one flat off center then it bugs me as long as I own that rifle!
Thanks
Dennis

What a good idea, I'll have to keep it in the idea box, to make one when needed. That is if you don't mind someone copying your invention.:D

That one in the picture looks like an extinct language ;D.I saw another one decades ago in E.M.Farris's gun shop that was neatly stamped "Load here".
