OCTAGON BARREL CHANNEL CUTTERS
I had these made up for me by a Tool Room Machinist decades ago. They are for milling straight octagon barrel channels. The work great for both walnut and hard maple.
There are three sizes: .980" for 1 inch channels, .915" for 15/16' channels (these two slightly undersize leaving .010" on each side) and one precision ground from a 3/4" end mill for 3/4" channels. They work best running at a fairly high speed in a vertical milling machine with a slow feed speed. A clever fellow could adapt procedure for tapered or swamped barrels.
The flat cutters have relief angles on each cutting edge. They measure 3~1/4" overall length with .620" shanks 1~1/2" long for a 5/8" collet. They were precision ground for size and shape. The have relief bevels on each cutting edge and are hardened and tempered.
I have no idea what they are worth except to say than they were priceless when I needed to cut a barrel channel. Probably most useful for straight pistol barrels, I also used them for half-stock rifle channels. How about $75 each $225 for the set for three and $10 Priority Mail shipping.
Please post I'll take it and follow-up with a quick PM.
Many thanks,
