Colonial Cumberland and York Rifles
« on: December 11, 2024, 06:32:15 AM »
Looking for photos or information on surviving ~pre 1780 rifles from Cumberland County- specifically interested in the area around Carlisle PA.
Also looking for surviving rifles and non-German rifle makers from York from that period.
I don’t have RCA 2 which lists some of the York pieces and can’t get access to it right now- wondering if anyone can help point out some of these?

(I went to the forum on York and Cumberland Co- unfortunately people linked all the photos years ago which means photobucket deleted them so they’re not really too helpful anymore)

Do a simple internet search like this one to find original longrifles. This one is for George Schroyer.

I’m not thinking the buttstock repair involves adding a brass box where the wooden patchbox was. That would not be very evident. More likely is a broken toe, repaired by glueing and doweling.

Searching for an original with each and every feature in the description is not going to be fruitful. Any gun could have a silver thumb piece added, or not, for example. Only looking at originals with thumb pieces would be very limiting.

If you have RCA 1, look at rifle 17. Big early smooth rifle that has a big slab of wood glued on the underside. But again, searching for an original that has every feature and comes from your areas of interest and timeframe will be severely limiting.

Thanks/ I haven’t been able to find a list of Cumberland makers from the period to help with my search. And the only York maker I know is Schroyer and most of the originals I’m finding in my google searches for him post date the 1780s.
I definitely don’t need a rifle with all the features of the original- just would love to see some pre 1780s Cumberland rifles in general but having trouble finding any on google.

Anyone living in Carlisle would not have that far to go to York to get a gun.
The Kentucky Rifle Association has a lot of CDs of longrifles from different areas. Not expensive and they have great pictures. In volume 2 of RCA, #92 is a big hoss of an early gun - not giving ground to Albrecht, Dickert, or Schreit early rifles in mass of the buttstock. It could easily predate 1770. There’s an early Schroyer with an unusual patchbox latch not shown in RCA but it might be on the CD. Not enough early York rifles are made by contemporary makers.

Thanks!
Do you happen to know whether the “Wes White Photo Collection
Central Pennsylvania and South along the Great Wagon Road” has a decent number of pre 1780s rifles on there or if they were pretty much all post colonial pieces? Trying to decide which USB things to put on the Christmas wishlist! Asking for the $100+ is a little steep but I could totally put in for stuff like those USB’s. I just am swimming up to my ears in 1790-1830s rifles and would really like to prioritize sources for colonial pieces. I’m sure most of these discs have a mix, just looking for good starting places as I dive into this earlier period

Yes, the KRF Wes White Central PA flash drive (Issue XXIII) has pictures of over a dozen early rifles attributed to central PA including the Bower rifle Rich was referring to. The York issue (Issue X) has mostly post Rev War guns. They are available at kentuckyriflefoundation.org.
