patching where do you get yours from
« on: January 22, 2025, 04:07:08 AM »
Ok Joan fabric is in it's 2nd bankrupt filing this year, it's the place I buy my patching, with that said I bought several yrds of my denim ( now called bull denim, seems thinner than the 10oz) and a full bolt of #40 drill cloth( near impossible to find around hear)

So if Joan goes out of business where do you find patching

10 oz Army Duck, best stuff I have ever used, other than Teflon. If you have trouble finding it, pm me and I will send you the link.

Minute Man Patching sold by Ron Hite. I think that it must be a type of canvas. I use it in .015 but he has it in different thickness. He can be reached at 330-262-5482 in the evenings. Super nice guy and the best patching I have ever used. IMHO, it's worth every penny.

This is what I use,  when going from .020 Teflon to this (.020) I had to go from .535 ball down to .530. They have allot of other fabrics.

Not all are affected. I use both red striped and blue striped ticking from them. The red striped is .012-.015, the blue is .015-.018. I buy a half bolt of each. Keep them in a light proof rubber tub. The red striped is 8 years old and as good as when I bought it. It's all in how you store it.

Yard goods stores or sewing stores where they sell bolts of cloth for clothing, etc, makers.
Take your mic or calipers with you.
I find 10 ounce denim works in just about every gun I have, with either a .005" to .008" under bore sized ball.
100% cotton, of course.

Old post, I know. But it keeps slipping my mind to reply. Anyway lately I've been buying my patching material from Eastern Maine Shooting Supplies   https://www.emshootingsupplies.com/#/    They have a site on ebay also but I don't do buisness with ebay any longer so I use the website.
The last I bought was some of the bulk patching at .015", this was advertised as ticking but it had no stripes and was brown in color. What I got has a very tight weave and loads easy. I've tried it in both my .54 and .40 and get the same accuracy as the .0175" I usually use.
They carry a variety of shooting items also.

I use pillow ticking & go to several places until I find what I want & buy the entire bolt.
Then I don't have to look again for 15 yrs.
Cut with a Ditz  Rotary fabric cutting wheel & cut on the fabric cutting board & 2-3 layers at a time.
Can cut 5,000 1" patches in about 15 min & not have to cut any for yrs.
I do 1", 1.25", 1.50" patches & it covers .32 to .62.  calibers.

CAUTION The Ditz Wheel is a Rotary Razor Blade & you will lose a dang finger REAL EASY.  I use it & lock it away, as it is extremely dangerous.

It appears Joann's is completely gone now. There was many of them here in Utah and they're all shuttered.

It's unfortunate because I was going to go source some thinner patching. I have enough 0.020-0.023 (hard caliper compressed) to last me awhile but am needing something in the 0.015 (hard caliper compressed) range.

Is there any quick ship online options? I have a gun coming Thursday and I think my patching will be too thick to start a ball.

Michaels is apparently increasing their fabric offerings since Joann's is gone, so that is good.

I may have to try either the EMS patches or the Minute Man patches

I found a really nice high thread count old linen table cloth , which is wonderful for patching. It's large enough for years of my patching needs. Well worth looking out for since not many use these anymore, so they show up in yard sales fairly often around here

Looking ahead to next year, several of us have gotten together and are planning a group buy from a wholesale canvas supplier.  The guy ramrodding it has ordered sample yardage of several fabrics.  After some testing we'll get an order placed for a few year's supply.

If you have a Hobby lobby near you they have fabric. I haven't bought any from them so I don't know what they have. We have a lot of Amish about an hour south of me, going to see if I can find where they get their material from.

I carried a Dial Caliper in my truck for Years, just to measure fabric.  I wanted specific sizes & would run across it.  Also, measure it in Several places.  Sometimes not the same thickness on both edges.   I have one red/white bolt that is 15 on one side & 13 on the other side.  IF you look close on it you can see where it changed threads or tension or something.  But I use Both & bag them separately.

No plans on resale; we're just all tired of having to chase down new supplies every couple years.  If we settle on the same stuff and buy a bolt (39 yards by 36"-60" depending on what we order) it should last for a few years.

I perused Michaels selection yesterday and didn't find much that was in the thickness range I wanted with a weave tight enough for me to want to try it. They were out of the denim they carry so I couldn't check that.

I did get some Roc-lon heavy duty muslin which was the densest weave I could find (pretty comparable to Joann's denim) but only measures 0.012 after washing and drying. It might be too thin except for in a very shallow groove barrel.

I also got some canvas that measures 0.017 after washing that doesn't seem quite as dense weave. We'll see if it works.

I'm probably going to get some of that minute-men patching.
