Primitive shooting sticks
« on: February 03, 2025, 08:30:00 PM »
I have for some time a balance issue and neuropathy in my feet. It has gotten to the point I no longer can shoot trail walks do to the fact I just can't stand on uneven ground without wobbling around long enough to get a shot off. I am going to try shooting with shooting sticks hoping that with three legs in front it will help. I want to make a set that looks primitive and not use a modern style set. Anyone have a set they can share a picture of or any ideas? I am not ready to quit shooting or just shoot off a bench at targets.

I hope this is kind of what your talking about. About 15 yrs ago I had shoulder surgery an I used this for awhile till I could hold steady again. Its wrapped in brain tan to protect gun finish and to be silent. I put a crutch tip on the bottom for stability. Its very crude but it works. I kept it cause you just never know. You could cut it according to the length you desire

You can also try tying three willow poles together tipi style and set them up as a tripod.

Just be careful not to win. You could well be at deaths door, and someone will still accuse you of cheating.  ;D

Redheart: That won't be a problem for two reasons, but I do agree with you.
1. We have some exceptional shooters who in my prime I would have been hard pressed to beat.
2. The last time I shot off a set of primitive sticks they didn't help as much as you would have thought.

This is true because you still have the butt stock only supported by your shoulder which wobbles around. They do help some though.

With this set, the middle stick is flat topped and where the rifle sits.

These are simple and infinitely adjustable, light, easy to make from lumber yard pine. they work equally well for turkey and deer. ;D

Got some issues myself Mike, good luck!!!!
