Early Transitional done!
« on: February 18, 2025, 01:36:16 AM »
This started as a Dunlap kit I bought many years ago.
.54 cal Getz 37", Chambers Early Germanic lock.
I made the one piece nose cap and patch box and did the carving, engraving and wire inlay.
Thanks to all those who contribute useful information to this site!

That is easy on the eyes. I like dark rifles and this one fits the bill. Very nice work.

Thank you for the comments. It’s all Wallace Guslers fault! I was a freshman in high school when they showed The Gunsmith from Williamsburg, and that started me down the rabbit hole.
Living out west all my life and not having access to original's it has been difficult to get an understanding of how they were made. I have several books including Robert Weils Contemporary Makers book and I have studied everything I could find that Bivins wrote. I bought the Moravian Gunmaking II Book but I still struggled with the design on this rifle. I finally thought “ok, if I landed on the East coast in the 1700s near Christian’s Spring and had all winter to build a rifle to take West… what would I build?” And that’s how it ended up.
Thank you,
William Johnson

Very nicely done. I especially like the 'if I landed' part of the premise for this rifle.  I have parts on hand for a very similar premise.
