Photo of Southern rifle with rounded pistol grip...
« on: February 28, 2025, 10:53:21 PM »
Perhaps this photo has been displayed before, but I don't remember seeing a Southern rifle with such a strong straight wrist feature and pistol grip.

Does the photo indicate where it might have been taken? These portrait photos are usually partially "staged," such as the dog at their feet, pistol in the belt, and dead bird in the stone between their shoulders. I mention this simply because some of the items may have been borrowed for the photo shoot. Both rifles have exaggerated spurs coming off the guards' bows, which suggests to me a little farther south than we might first think, SC, GA, MS, etc. The full-stocked rifle, when enlarged, looks like it has an extended "pistol grip" carved into the butt stock... you can see its bottom end when enlarged... which is a really different detail.

I do believe that bird to be a bobwhite quail.

I blew the pic up too and can easily see that pistol grip but am I seeing an oct-round barrel?  I swear I see wedding bands, and at the muzzle it sure looks round? A smoothbore maybe? ...LK

Double set triggers on that one and a single trigger on the other.

Neat picture, I can add that the pistol is either a Smith & Wesson or Harrington & Richardson hammerless revolver. That would date the photo post 1887 if Smith & Wesson and or post 1899 if Harrington & Richardson.

Double set triggers on that one and a single trigger on the other.

And front and rear sights too.  My guess it's a rifle.

Apparently its' not important if some people cannot see the photograph in question.

Great photo. Also noticed how two very different rifles have basically the same trigger guard, and what long ramrods they have.
That horn on the fellow on the right really tucks in nicely against his body.
