2025 March online shoot
« on: March 01, 2025, 10:26:58 PM »
This time it’s a basic bullseye target with a bonus center spot. 5 shots offhand at 25 yards or benched at 50 yards. Shoot up to 4 targets. Add a 5 points bonus for smoothbore.

I assume 1/2 ball over the line to score, or should I use my new 8 bore. ;)

Looks like I can use my fowler for a score of at least 5.

Just printed 3 targets, I like it. Hopefully will get a semi calm day to shoot.

On this forum, at least half the pictures don't show.
Other forums work right.

Some matches are “leaded edge” for standing and center of the hole for rest shots. Most of the matches I shoot are edge of the bullet touching the ring. This is easier to call in timed matches if there is manual scoring in the pits. But I ain’t the rule maker.

First time I had heard of centre of the ball, was a report from Friendship in the mid 70's.
I had been used to edge of the ball hole scored higher if touching, but that was not ML shooting.

I've been wanting to shoot these matches for a good while and finally weather and obligations aligned and I got out yesterday.   This was shot with my 1981 vintage Lyman GPR with a Green Mountain barrel.   54 caliber.  I had just finished some practice shots for a match and decided to shoot this target before the match.   I got two shots off and the first relay was called.   The first two shots were 50 gr Scheutzen 3f, 535 ball and #40 patch with soap and water lube.   I ran.out of 535 balls and shot the last three after the match with 70 gr Scheutzen 3f,  530 balls,  10 oz cotton patch and soap/water lube.

The bore was never wiped for the entire shooting session.

I figured the score at 39 but subject to inspection by the match coordinator.

You’re leading the match! Agree with a 39 scored to the center of the ball.

Are the apparent groupings of 3 and two from the two different loadings, if so which is which?

That's the intuitive view but the 10 and the nine were the first two shots ant the others the last three. So? ???  It did surprise me.  OTOH,  between the first two and the last three I shot four match targets and was getting a little tired.

March 7th target. Gloomy overcast day, upper 40's. My old eyes weren't up to it today. Told Marc we would have to try again before March ends. Main thing was that we had fun.

I will be interested to see how that target is scored JB.  I see (top to bottom):

9
10 or 15
10
9 or 10
8

So low of 46 and a possible high of 52?   I guess highest max possible score is 5x15 or score of 75 if someone put them all in the red center.  Won't be me!    :-)

What do you see Okawbow?

God Bless, and best wishes,   Marc

I see it as 52. Little hard to tell because of tears. Would be better if a cardboard backing was used.
Good shooting!

okawbow, sorry about the tearing. I think it was the printer paper that I used because a fresh cardboard backer was used. I know how difficult calling some shots can be so I refreshed the cardboard in an effort to make things crisper. I'll try again later in the month, if Marc can put up with me. I will also use a fresh cardboard and different paper! Thanks - I know it's not easy.

Happy to go again JB and provide spotter's duty.  Still 23 points left on the table.  Time's-a-wasting.    ;-)   Wish my eyeballs were doing better.

I shot at our local range yesterday afternoon. It is the first time that I have been able to shóot since January.
I used my no name .45 cap lock. I used a .440 ball, bear lubed canvas over 50 grains of 3f Goex.
Shot offhand at 25 yards. I score it a 45.
This was my third target. It took me some time to settle down with all the distractions.

Shot my Fowler yesterday, benched at 50 yards, only the second time shooting this smoothbore. Results not too good, even with the 5 point bonus.

A 9 + 5 (smoothbore) for 14. Two of the shots didn't hit the page. Load was 80 gr 2Fg, an over powder card, a loose .610 RB and an over shot card.

Then today took my .45 rifle, shooting 70 gr 3Fg, .018 neatsfoot lubed patch and .440 RB.

I use to get groups of about 1.5" at 50 yards, the only difference was using Hoppes lube. Maybe with neatsfoot I need to do more load development.

To say that offhand shooting with a flintlock is a challenge for me is an understatement. The first target was shot using a center hold and the second a 6 o’clock hold trying to lower the impact points. It was harder, however, to see a good sight picture. Probably need to make a sight adjustment.

Practice, practice, practice. Participation in this monthly shoot is incentive to do just that.

My last 2 targets for this month.

Clementine, the Kibler .36 SMR, 40 gr 3Fg, .020 patch with dilute Dawn soap lube a .350 RB.

First target at 25 yards fron hand braced on post.

3 shots touch 2 lower.

Second target fully off hand, with wobbliness on display.

On a side note, I must say that I like this target, not too much ink to print, but still easy to see, even at 50 yards, and the many scoring rings for fine tuned scoring.
