Patch box release hole
« on: March 06, 2025, 03:47:53 AM »
Started ordering some parts for my next winter build, a .62 Jaeger on a cherry blank.

Decided to go with iron mounts this time and ordered these wood patch box ends.

You see it says the hole in the forward cover is for a patch box release. I have never done a patch box before, but understand how the ones with a release at the butt work. Cannot picture how a forward release button would work. If someone has pictures or a sketch I would appreciate it.

I own the Jaeger from which the molds were made for these parts. I am currently having issues with posting photos on the forum. If you provide me with your email address, I can send you photos.

The mechanisim uses a tetertauter like system. There is a link between the lever that has the button and the catch that secures the lid. Depressing the button causes the catch to disengage. There is a spring that keeps the catch in a lock position and the button in the proud possition for pressing.

I for one, always curious and learning mechanical processes, would love to see this release in a form that was put into use. Can the pictures be shared? The spring and lever pivot is driving my curiosity.
Thanks.

Look at this.  The pictures from Ron Scott.

You can see the push button sticking up through the rear of the front lid piece.

Here is the under side

Side view, upside down. You see the end of the pivot pin that the latch bar pivots on, a spring under it holds it out.

Now right side up. The pushbutton is pinned to the latch bar, pushing it in raises the latch bar up back at the butt plate end so lid can slide out. When slid in the latch bar compresses the spring and if made correctly just as lid reaches full movement forward the latch bar would  clear butt plate and snap down to hold it in. Actually, it looks like the latch face might be a bit in from the butt plate.

Makes perfect sense, time will tell if I can do it justice, a project for next winter.

(It was in the 60's yesterday, 20's today and snowing, which does not qualify as next winter.)
