Finally got my Fowler to the range.
« on: March 09, 2025, 08:28:08 PM »
I was waiting for a nice sunny day that wasn't freezing cold.

For the 1st time I took it out, I was really happy with the results.

The pictures are from 25 yards. It was shooting a little low and maybe slightly to the right. But, for the 1st time it went great.

The pictures are of 7/8 ounces of #6 and 10 pellets of 00.

I am sure you know, raising the comb or a lighter cheek weld to the comb will raise that pattern. A very tight pattern for only 7/8 ounce of shot. It may pattern well at 30 yards with a full ounce? I wouldn't be afraid to turkey hunt with that!

That IS a nice tight pattern with the #6's.

Is the barrel choked? Nice pattern!

Yes, it's choked. That was the modified tube.

I plan on using a rear sight and trying a full choke next time I am at the range.

What was the "load" composed of, please, ie: powder amount, make and F rating as well as wads.

As normal with modern chokes, BP loads usually throw one choke UP!

70 grains of 2 FFg

2 cardboard over powder cards.

A 20 gauge Remington wad. I used a utility knife and cut open a modern shell. I was careful not to spill any shot. That's what I'm basing the 7/8 charge upon. It said so on the box. I was extremely careful to make sure there was no smokeless powder still on the bottom of the wad.

1 thick over shot wad.

I ordered some of the crazy expensive TSS shot today. That's what I plan on using for turkeys. I further plan on getting everything else dialed in before shooting any of that.

What size did you get? I have heard of guys using #9 Tungsten for turkey.
You might want to use a 20 bore steel shot sleeve with that stuff to protect the bore & of course, couple cards between powder and the plastic wad.

That's 42 yards.

I was amazed.  I would have never expected to be able to keep it that tight.  It's actually too tight for anything other than turkeys.

That's a 12" circle and a 24" circle. The pellet count is of the 12" circle.

3/4 ounce of 7.5s and 3/4 ounce of 9.5s. Mylar wad. 70 grains of Goex FFg. No over powder wads, just and over shot card.

When I did the trial with lead shot, the wads weren't as tight to the bore. These newer wads are slightly over bore. They were a pain to ram down the barrel. That's why I decided to skip the over powder card.

The tungsten can damage your barrel. So, the wad is made out of Mylar which is stronger than a normal plastic wad.

I also found the steel shot wads slightly larger than the lead-shot wads.
Beautiful pattern for longer range ducks depending on shot size.

That pattern is actually too tight for anything other than turkey.

I like 30" at the desired range.
