Schwietzer rifle
« on: March 11, 2025, 01:36:00 AM »
Greetings,

A friend of mine has an old rifle that is a family heirloom. He believes it was made by a builder named Schwietzer. The family is from Maryland. It is thought to have been built circa 1786. I will try and get better photos. Here are what I have so far.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Mike

Could be Ohio, or Pennsylvania. If you do a search on this site for Schweitzer, you may find some stuff. They were an Abraham, (Lancaster Pa) ,Daniel, Jacob & John all Pa makers, & a Conrad in  , Ohio.

Looks to early to be ohio. I would guess lancaster, but someone on here will know for sure.

Judging by what there is to see in these pictures, I'd say Abraham Schweitzer, judging by the cheek side carving, and a few other things.
Better pics would sure help!

Has the owner looked on the barrel for a signature?

Mike,

I would have the owner take some photos in the sun light so we could see some of the finer details.  It has some Schweitzer characteristics.

Mike the back ground cloth needs to be a darker color like grey or simmilar. The camera is shutting down to compensate for the pale back ground making the subject too dark.

Thank you all very much for the comments and suggestions. I am working to get better photos from my friend. In the meantime, I messed with the levels to see if more could be seen with what I have.
