One big lock.
« on: March 16, 2025, 05:27:34 PM »
I saw a Brown Bess lock on Ebay that I thought would make for an interesting fowler build. There were some guns built with salvaged locks after the revolution.

So, when the lock arrived, it clearly wasn't from a Bess. I'm guessing that it was from a punt gun or a eall gun.

So, I'm looking for people's thoughts 🤔 on what it is. I'm fairly certain that it's English. I'm also wondering if it's 1700's or 1800's.

L&R Queen Anne for for reference.

That's a HONKER of a lock.
I would suggest a wall gun would be loser to a 4 bore, or larger.  1oz. to the pound is a mid weight fowler @ 16 bore.
This lock looks quite suitable for a punt gun with a 1 1/2" bore or larger.

Thats a great looking lock. I have an Ed Rayl made barrel that is a close copy of Harpers Ferry arsenal made wall guns. They produced very few of them and I never could find a lock that I felt would work well with the barrel.

There's some faint writing on the plate. I believe that is once said Barnett.

It came mounted in the frame as shown.  I took it out/off of the frame and tried to cock it. It wasn't easily going back. So, my next thoughts are to disassemble it. Remove any old oils as they're varnish now. Oil it up and reassemble it.

Unfortunately, my mainspring clamp doesn't fit on the spring. It's way too large. So, for now it's back on the board.
