Coloring Quills

I've a good bunch of porcupine quills, and I'd like to try decorating a few things with them.
But how, and with what, are they colored? What dyes, in other words, will give lively bright colors?
Sure appreciate any info.

We are all elated when Dame Fortune smiles at us, but remember that she is always closely followed by her daughter, Miss Fortune.

I just used Rit dye from the grocery store. I seem to remember that I had to de-grease them to get the dye to take, but it’s been so long ago I don’t remember what I used. It could have been rubbing alcohol. Some colors work better than others.
